I’ve wanted an FJ-09 since I rented one a few years ago in Hawaii and rode around the Big Island. I’ve randomly looked at them ever since as they continue to get cheaper and cheaper on the used market. They are squarely in my financial realm now.

But while looking at CL recently I was reminded that the Hyperstrada was a thing. It’s basically a big supermoto with a windscreen and saddlebags.

My rental in some lava fields.

I’ve always assumed the Ducati was lighter and faster as it looks slimmer. I was wrong. They are very similar. Looking at 2016 model years.

My rental on top of a mountain.

The Ducati has a little bit more torque and better looks but the Yamaha has more range, a smoother engine, better reliability, and increased wind protection.

More lava fields.

As much as I would love the Ducati I’ve already settled on the Yamaha. It’s such a great all around package. I pushed it hard on some twisty Hawaiian roads and it never even started to falter. Since it is a semi-adventure bike the ergonomics are great. It’s easy to stand up and ride it like a dirt bike over uneven terrain.

Fantastic wheel color.

There were a few things I didn’t enjoy but can live with:

-It sounds weird at low rpms, however sounds amazing at high rpms.

-The gauge cluster is unreadable in direct sunlight.

-The fuel gauge is comprised of 5 sections and not consistent in any way.

-The throttle is a little jerky but can be easily fixed with a new tune.

On a side note, do not put an aerosol sunscreen can in your baggage and ride from sea level to 13,500' in an hour. It creates quite an inconvenience.

Pretty pointless comparison as I know I want the FJ-09, but I thought It was interesting how similar the two are considering the Ducati was 4-5k more when they were new and I had never considered cross shopping them before.

Bonus pic with my rental Mustang.

That Ducati is awfully pretty though.

I have an FZ-09 and it is just such a fun bike.  I’m sure the FJ with a little more wind and ride comfort is just as fun.  Can’t really go wrong.

I have a friend who just traded his fz 07 for a tracer 900 aka fj 09 in GT trim, he loves it.

My ‘15. Smallest street bike I’ve had in 30 years. Also, one of the best.

I’ve looked into the newer GT models and they are awesome with the adjustable suspension and heated grips, but they are still pretty expensive. 2019 regular models are listing for about 4-5k less.
